What is a Disability?

Description

This course is designed to improve knowledge of the 13 categories of disability under the Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA).  Each category of disability will be discussed including, prevalence, characteristics, the processes involved in identification, as well as educational considerations for each category. 

Course Goals (The participant will…)

• Identify the 13 categories of disability under IDEA
• Compare prevalence rates of students with disabilities in SDOC to the state and national averages
• Identify characteristics of students with disabilities
• Examine the processes and requirements for identification of a disability under IDEA
• Discuss educational considerations for students with disabilities
