Description

This course is designed to improve teachers’ knowledge of the 13 categories of disability under the Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA). Each category of disability will be discussed including, prevalence, characteristics, the processes involved in identification, as well as educational considerations for each category. Teachers are provided opportunities to explore and analyze case studies to enhance their knowledge of disabilities.


Course Outline

Participants will...

  • List each of the 13 categories of disability under IDEA
  • Explore prevalence rates of students with disabilities in SDOC to the National Average
  • Identify characteristics of students with disabilities
  • Examine the processes and requirements for identification of a disability under IDEA
  • Evaluate case studies and identify the disability and educational considerations
