Description
While school faculty and staff that serve youth with disabilities understand the importance of ensuring students are served in the least restrictive environment, many families of youth with psychiatric, intellectual, and developmental disabilities pursue guardianship with little knowledge of its lasting impact or available alternatives. This session will explore Supported Decision Making and other available means of support that may more effectively support a person’s hopes for their lives after high school.Course Outline
1. Participants will be given an overview of self-determination and its critical importance to post-school outcomes for youth with disabilities.
2. Participants will be provided with an overview of the function of full/plenary guardianships.
3. Participants will learn about Supported Decision Making and the landscape other alternatives so that they may be able to better provide information on the supports available across a person’s lifespan.
