Full course description
"Identifying and meeting the diverse needs of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder is challenging. Without considering how neurological differences impact students with autism, teachers and staff may misinterpret students' behaviors, such as when students want to be the winner every time they play a game, respond to tasks by hitting, or move around the room when they should be sitting and working. When behaviors are accurately interpreted and appropriate alternatives, accommodations, and modifications are made, students become more engaged, academically productive, and socially appropriate. In this session, participants will be able to name characteristics and neurological differences of autism spectrum disorder that impact students in classroom and social situations. Throughout the session, participants will identify techniques to provide appropriate, positive support to effectively address the neurological, anxiety, or sensory causes of the behaviors."
