Full course description
In the wake of COVID-19, classroom teachers are presented with a torrent of
disruptive and problematic student behaviors. Teachers are having to make difficult choices
between addressing disruptive behavior and continuing to do what they do best–teach. The
science of behavior analysis offers a copious amount of research regarding best practices for skill
acquisition and behavior reduction. In this session, staff will learn how to practically apply some
basic behavior analytic strategies and concepts that can dramatically bolster their ability to
address student problem behavior before it ever gets to the Tier 2 or 3 stages. A few strategies
that may be covered include: effective prompting, effective use of differential reinforcement to
encourage desired behavior, the power of praise, and the basic functions of behavior (giving staff
the ability to make quick decisions about how best to respond to problem behavior in the
moment).
