The morning session will focus on giving strategies for teachers to foster self-determination in their work with students with disabilities. We will discuss the effectiveness of framing lessons through the lens of an independent living philosophy, what research suggests, and give a hands-on demonstration of an example lesson to use in the classroom. The afternoon session will walk teachers through DOE guidelines, explain the principles of supported decision making, explore the common pitfalls of guardianship, and give alternative tools for families and individuals. The session will then walk through Able SC Student Led IEP curriculum lessons and discuss development, changes, and mistakes to avoid when using the curriculum in the classroom.
