Full course description

Dr. Jan Burkins, co-author of Shifting the Balance: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Balanced Literacy Classroom, will spend two days with teachers on practical strategies that teachers can use to bring the information we have gained from the science of reading research into the balanced literacy classroom in ways that preserve the integrity of both models. Day 1 will focus on the first three shifts that teachers can make to address misconceptions that educators have had, the latest information from the research, and simple instructional shifts that can make a huge difference on beginning reading comprehension, phonemic awareness, and phonics. Day 2 will focus on high-frequency word instruction, strategies for supporting problem-solving of words, and texts for beginning readers. Participants will each receive a copy of Shifting the Balance: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Balanced Literacy Classroom by Dr. Jan Burkins and Kari Yates. You will need to have that book available for this session. Participants will commit to attending both days.
