Understanding Texts and Readers (SDOC Elementary Reading Institute)

When Jennifer Serravallo wrote her book Understanding Texts and Readers, her goal was to help reading comprehension instruction make sense for teachers. Presenter Barb Golub's experience working with Jen has helped her to present the extensive strategies and information from Jen's book in an even more practical way for our teachers. As readers grow and mature, the text characteristics and what to expect from the reader at a new level also change. You will leave this workshop with the knowledge to make the appropriate decisions for individual students when they need to make progress, but may not be doing so. All of the threads of comprehension (levels, engagement, stamina, the relevance of texts, and so much more) will be addressed. Participants will each receive a copy of the professional text Understanding Texts and Readers by Jennifer Serravallo. You will need to have that book available for this session.
